Now, Don't get me wrong, play time is awesome! But my mother use to say, "If you
work hard, you can play even harder!" Growing up with two teachers as
parents, the games and toys we had were usually geared more toward learning.
I'm in my middle 30's and when I was a teenager, the game system Atari was
the Wii of those days. Many of my friends and cousins had an Atari, but my
parents refused to buy it. My mom said my mind would turn to mush if all I
did was sit in front of the TV and play the Atari all day. I thought she was
over reacting at the time, but the more statistics I see regarding how a high
percentage of American kids are not prepared to enter college because of
their lack of basic skills, the more I'm starting to agree with her
statement. These same kids that are talked about in these statistics may not
be ready for college, but many of them sure know how to master the Wii, Xbox,
or Playstation games.

Again, I'm not saying there's not a time and place for
play, but when will educational games become priority. There are all types of
fun learning games for kids. Some of the best learning games for kids are
the ones some parent or teacher just made up to get the children to use their
"thinking caps". Take Hopscotch for example. Kids all over know how to play
Hopscotch, but when they play the game do they add up the numbers together as
they hop along? This is an example of simple math skills being put to work.
What about the Easy-Bake Oven? (Who knew you could bake a cake with a light
bulb!) You can cut up the cake into slices and teach fractions to your
children. Why not? Why not give our children every opportunity to be as smart
as they can be by giving them educational games that will challenge their
minds. To this day, I am so greatful that my parents made it a point to get
some learning in with my fun!
